Mission Statement

Safe Kids Foundation is an organization dedicated to the prevention of unintentional childhood injury. The mission of Safe Kids Foundation is to prevent unintentional injuries to children ages 0-14. Safe Kids Foundation plans to bring about changes in attitudes, behaviors, practices, laws and government policies to prevent accidental injuries to children which could occur due to transport accidents, fires, drowning, falls, poisoning etc.

The Problem :

In India, a country with a projected population of 1.18 billion people in 2011 of whom 362, 874, 979 (2009) are under the age of 14 (source:National Commission on Population, Govt. of India),  accidental injuries is one of the leading causes of death and disability. In the year 2008, 1,18, 239 were killed because of road accidents.It is also the leading cause of death among children ages 5-14. In the year 2008, 7829 children died succumbing to the road accidental injuries (source:Accidental deaths and suicides in India, Ministry of Home Affairs, Govt. of India). According to World Health Organization data, road traffic claims the lives of more than 60,000 children in India each year,and drowning another 33,400. In Mumbai alone, the police reports show more than 3,400 people (13 per day) are killed in road accidents each year and in Delhi this number is 3187 in first six months of year 2010 (source:Delhi police statistics of road accidents).

Key Messages :

1. Unintentional childhood injury is a leading killer and disabler of children ages 0-14 in India.

2. There is no "accident" but "preventable injury".
