Autobiography of a Footpath

This essay by Sahil Shah, std.VII, Greenlawns Highschool, Mumbai won 1st prize.

I am a footpath parallel to the famous Marine Drive in Mumbai. I was built many decades ago, but I have undergone many changes. Of course people walk on me and I help ensure their safety, yet I have seen a few people who think they are very smart and walk on the road. Their foolishness costs them their lives as the cars on Marine Drive go quite fast. From all my past experience, I have realized that most of the casualties that occur on the road are due to drunken driver. Another major cause of death is speeding youngsters.Once a speeding youngster knocked down an old lady who died on the spot. The terrified youth tried to abscond but the police caught up with him. Now a days police organize road safety campaigns to prevent accidents. They aim to drive all the road safety rules into the drivers's minds. They are advertising the use of seat belts and helmets saying that it is better to be safe than sorry. During accidents helmets and seat belts provide efficient protection. Obeying signals is safer as one may reach the destination late than never reaching. I am sure that one day Indians will achieve their goal as small strokes fell great oaks. I only hope that I will live to see that day. I, too have have thought of some slogans like; "Youngsters have no fear, But life is Dear"
