With a population on the threshold of some 4.5 millions, the limitations of the infrastructure available for city's pedestrians are evident through various surveys done to know pedestrian-friendliness of city streets.

One survey carried out showed that pedestrians are involved in 18% of the road accidents in Ahmedabad. In the year 2007, Gujarat state's share in the total accidental deaths in India was 6.7% in which Ahmedabad share alone stood at 5.1%; a fact which needs immediate attention to preventive solutions.

Almost 12,500 new vehicles get on Ahmedabad's roads every month, choking and making roads unfriendly for a child pedestrian. The absence of signal systems, signages, zebra crossings and traffic discipline is threatening many young lives daily.
